 DGSA Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor

Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA) Training Courses
Initial & Refresher

Welcome to the website dedicated to the Dangerous Goods Safety
Advisers (DGSA) syllabus and examinations.
If you're in the transport business, you'll know that since 1st January 2000,
any company or other organisation that transports dangerous goods (and
certain other organisations involved in transport related activities) should
have appointed qualified Dangerous Goods Safety Advisers. This
requirement, prompted by the EC directive (96/35/EC), covers road, rail,
and inland waterways.

Advisers will have to hold a certificate gained by passing a written examination.
In the UK, the examinations are being set and administered by the Scottish
Qualifications Authority (SQA).

EC Directive 96/35 requires companies involved in the transport, distribution and loading of dangerous goods consigned by road, rail or inland waterway to appoint a Dangerous Goods
Safety Adviser (DGSA). DGSAs are responsible for helping to prevent the adverse consequences
of the risks inherent in such activities in relation to people, property and the environment.

The directive requires that DGSAs shall be qualified by having taken and passed an approved
examination and that they shall have been issued with a Vocational Training Certificate (VTC)
before taking up their duties. There are no 'grandfather rights'. Every DGSA must pass the
approved examinations.
