Renewing your ADR Licence: understanding the five-year legal requirement

As the transport industry continues to evolve, staying up to date with safety regulations has never been more important, especially when dangerous goods are involved. ADR sets the standard for the international carriage of hazardous materials by road, covering everything from classification and packaging to labelling, documentation and emergency procedures.

Drivers who transport goods classified as dangerous are required by law to hold an ADR vocational qualification (unless Limited Quantities apply). It is also important for fleet managers, and anyone involved in handling or preparing dangerous goods, to have dangerous goods awareness training.  Understanding ADR rules is essential, helping ensure that you, your team and your organisation remain fully compliant and confident when transporting hazardous loads.

The importance of professional ADR training

Transporting dangerous goods requires more than just practical driving skills; it demands a thorough understanding of the nine ADR classifications, correct packaging methods, legal documentation, signage, vehicle equipment and emergency actions.

Anyone driving dangerous goods within ADR scope must hold an ADR Driver Training Certificate, achieved by completing approved training and passing the relevant examinations.

It’s not only drivers who need knowledge. Staff who load, unload, prepare or manage dangerous goods must also receive role-specific training in line with ADR requirements. Ensuring everyone understands their responsibilities makes day-to-day operations safer and more efficient—and reduces costly compliance errors.

What does an ADR Course Cover

ADR driver certificates need to be renewed every five years, so drivers must undertake the relevant training and pass the exams every five years. These courses can be taken from 12 months before the certificate expires, giving drivers flexibility to plan ahead.

ADR training covers the fundamentals of handling and transporting dangerous goods while also explaining any recent changes to ADR legislation. It includes health and safety responsibilities, correct packaging and documentation, emergency actions and best practice for securing hazardous loads.

For non-driving staff involved in dangerous goods administration or handling, periodic dangerous goods awareness training is strongly recommended. While ADR does not specify a formal period for undertaking this training, regular updates help ensure competence and safety across your organisation.

Booking the right ADR course for your fleet

Every organisation is different, which is why a flexible range of ADR training options can make all the difference.

The course that you take will depend on which qualification you need. The ADR Core & Packages course takes three and a half days, including the exams. If you need to be able to drive tankers, the ADR Core, Packages & Tanks course takes five days, including exams. If you already hold an ADR licence in packages and need to add the qualification to drive tankers, then you can simply take a one-and-a-half-day add-on course and pass the tanks examination. Should you need a qualification for transporting explosives or radioactives, these are additional one-day courses which you can book individually, but you must already have an ADR qualification to attend these. You would need to pass the relevant exams to add these additional classes to your ADR licence.

If you have several team members who need training, arranging an exclusive course for your organisation may be the most convenient option. Training can be delivered at your premises or at our Essex training centre, making it easy to fit into your schedule.

For teams who handle but do not drive dangerous goods, Dangerous Goods Awareness courses provide essential knowledge and confidence, ensuring everyone involved understands their responsibilities.
