What to Expect from Your Driver CPC Training Week

If you're a professional LGV or HGV driver, you already know the deal: 35 hours of Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) training every five years to keep your Driver Qualification Card valid.
For many drivers, the thought of spending a full week in a classroom feels about as appealing as a Monday morning traffic jam. We get it. Nobody jumps at the chance to sit through hours of training when they'd rather be on the road.
But here's the thing: Driver CPC training isn't what most drivers expect. It's not death by PowerPoint. It's not someone droning on while you fight to stay awake. And if you choose the right training centre, it can actually be useful.
If you've been putting off booking your Driver CPC renewal, or you're a first-timer wondering what you've signed up for, this guide will walk you through exactly what happens during a week-long course at Novadata.
Why Driver CPC training matters
Let's be honest: most drivers see Driver CPC as a legal requirement they have to grudgingly complete. And yes, it is legally required that all professional drivers of vehicles over 3.5 tonnes for hire or reward must complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years.
But the topics covered, from drivers' hours law to what to do after an accident, from safe loading to mental health awareness, aren't random. They're designed to equip you with knowledge that could genuinely save your licence, your job, or even your life.
So yes, it's a legal requirement. But it's also an opportunity to refresh your knowledge, learn something new, and make sure you're not inadvertently breaking rules you didn't know existed.
Before your course: what you need to know
Novadata courses run for five consecutive days. Doors open at 8:00 am each morning, and registration takes place every day, so aim to arrive by 8:15 am at the latest. The good news? Lunch and refreshments are provided throughout the week.
What's included in the price
- All 35 hours of training across five modules
- 5 x £8.75 DVSA registration fees
- A 3-year First Aid certificate (if you attend the First Aid module)
- Light lunch and refreshments daily
What to bring
- Your current Driver Qualification Card (DQC) or evidence of previous CPC training
- Photo ID
- Something to take notes with
- Comfortable clothing: you'll be sitting for most of the day
Note: If you recently passed your LGV test, you might need Initial Driver CPC training instead. Contact Novadata before booking if you're unsure.
During the week: what actually happens
The structure: five modules, seven hours each
- Your week covers five different modules from topics including:
- Drivers' Understanding of an Operator Licence
- Drivers Hours Law and Tachographs
- Actions After an Accident or Breakdown (including bridge strikes)
- Manual Handling and Fire Safety
- First Aid: Actions in an Emergency
- The Terrorist Threat and Driver Security
- Safe Loading and Vehicle Checking
- Safe Eco Driving including Vulnerable Road Users
- Driver Wellbeing Including Drink and Drugs Awareness
- Mental Health & Driving-Related Stress
Each module runs for seven hours (typically 8:15 am to around 4:30 pm with breaks).
What is the teaching style like?
This isn't a university lecture. Good Driver CPC training is interactive and practical.
Expect:
- Group discussions and sharing experiences with other drivers
- Real-world case studies and scenarios
- Practical demonstrations (especially for manual handling and first aid)
- Q&A sessions about situations you've encountered on the road
- Videos and visual aids to keep things engaging
The trainers at DVSA-accredited centres like Novadata understand that drivers learn best when training is relevant to their actual job. You won't be talked at for seven hours straight.
Are there tests or exams?
No written exams or tests to worry about. Driver CPC periodic training is non-assessed; you just need to attend and participate. You do need to be present for the full duration of each module to get it signed off.
Each day includes mid-morning break, lunch (provided), and mid-afternoon break. Use these to stretch your legs and chat with other drivers; many find these informal conversations just as valuable as the official training.
After the course: what you walk away with
At the end of each day, we produce a certificate for that module. Once you’ve completed all five days (35 hours), you’ll also receive:
- Updated Driver Qualification Card (DQC): valid for another five years
- First Aid certificate (3-year validity, if you attended that module, note that there is an ongoing assessment throughout the day to gain this certificate, which is separate from the Driver CPC certificate itself)
- Refreshed knowledge on rules and best practices
Your DQC will be updated automatically with the DVSA, though keep your module certificates as proof of completion.
Common questions about Driver CPC training
- Do I have to do all 35 hours in one week?
- No, you can spread your 35 hours across the five years by attending individual modules. But many drivers prefer to get it done in one week and not think about it for five years.
- What if I can't make it one day?
- You need to attend the full module to get it signed off. If you miss a day, you'll need to rebook that module.
- Is it really going to be useful?
- It depends on the training centre. DVSA-accredited centres like Novadata meet quality standards, and experienced trainers make content relevant and engaging. You'll likely learn something new, whether it's a legal requirement you didn't know about or a useful tip from another driver.
- What happens if my DQC expires?
- If you don't complete your 35 hours within five years, your DQC becomes invalid, and you can't legally drive professionally until you've completed the training. Don't let it lapse.
